MUSIC AND THE BRAIN

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) had close relations with Belgium, which included Ernest Solvay and later King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth. After Einstein had achieved international fame, his violin became a kind of trademark. Photo provided by Icons of Europe asbl, Brussels.Like many other artists and musicians as well as scientists such as Albert Einstein, I firmly believe that "culture stimulates the thinking process".  It is also said that "Mathematics is music for the mind;  music is mathematics for the soul" (anonymous).

According to the guide The Great Composers by Wendy Thompson (Lorenz Books, 2001), the Greek composer Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) who was born in Romania, even "introduced mathematical concepts and theories into his compositions, some of which are scored for traditional instruments, others for electronic media".

I am in the process of developing some information on the subject myself.  Meanwhile, you may wish to review other web sites that examine or illustrate a number of interesting issues.  For example:

The "Mozart Effect"
Harvard University Gazette
Music makes your brain happy

The power of culture

If you have any ideas or thoughts on 'music and the brain', I would be pleased to hear from you.
