We
believe that Icons
of art, music, literature and science capture the
imagination and stimulate cross-border
exchanges of.ideas and knowledge on contemporary
societal and political issues.
For example: the identity of Europe², the need to
re-write history, transatlantic relations,
and the re-emergence of tuberculosis. Relating to all
four issues, the subject of CHOPIN's
life and legacy has become a
particularly important priority for our work.
Chopin 2010 will
remain a
milestone (what
experts say).
Other Icons of Europe research priorities are:
(i) the life, works and downfall of OSCAR WILDE ("The one
duty we owe to history is to rewrite it",
The Critic As Artist);
(ii) NAPOLEON's
rise to power; (iii) SHAKESPEARE's
authorship; and (iv) the cultural exchanges of the 19th century BOSTON
SATURDAY CLUB with Europe.

Icons of Europe
The logo of Icons of Europe, a registered
trademark™,
was designed and introduced in April 2004. The rainbow
symbolizes many
aspects of the value of great culture:
bridge /
inspiration / dialogue / hope /
continuity / diversity /
identity. |
¹ "National
Icons and household names such as Da
Vinci, Chopin and Shakespeare
provide strong bonds between many European countries. This cultural
diversity
represents a huge asset that all adds up to an essential part of
Europe's identity
and values." -
Our letter published in the International Herald Tribune (2004).
² "The European idea has suffered from the absence of a
frank debate.
It has been hijacked by technocrats. It needs imagination ...".
